Where to Go Shelling Around Sarasota
Much like snowflakes, no two shells are the same, so searching for them is an activity that never grows old. Our real estate agents add to their shell collections with finds at these wonderful spots near Sarasota and Bradenton.
- Lido Key
Lido Key, a barrier island situated right across Sarasota Bay, offers not one but three popular spots for shelling. North Lido Beach Park, acquired in 1977, is intended to remain in its natural, undeveloped state. South Lido Beach Park is comprised of 100 acres of coastal habitats and open spaces. Lido Beach, the third part of the trifecta, is notable for its beautiful white sand. All three beaches are also well-known for their abundant bird-watching opportunities. Stick around until early evening to view some of the more stunning sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico. - Siesta Key
Even the name of Siesta Key promises a relaxing, leisurely experience. The eight-mile-long barrier island, just a short drive across the bridge from Sarasota homes for sale, is home to four different beaches that are major draws for shelling. If you want to expand your range, go snorkeling on the island's namesake beach to see beautiful rocks and coral. Turtle Beach, located on the south end of the island, is usually less crowded so it's easier to spot the shells. If you head to Palmer Point Beach, chances are you'll see at least one gopher tortoise during your shell search. Family-friendly Crescent Beach rounds out the quartet of Siesta Key beaches. - Anna Maria Island
Shells are so plentiful on Anna Maria Island, only minutes from Bradenton homes for sale, that visitors come from all around the world to explore. White powder-like sand, soothing turquoise waters, and a number of additional activities make Manatee Beach a favorite destination for tourists and locals. Palmetto Avenue Beach is somewhat secluded, so it's more likely to find unbroken shells here. Historic Nokomis Beach, the oldest in Sarasota County, is often described as a "hidden gem." There's little in the way of hotels and tourist infrastructure on the island, resulting in fewer visitors and a peaceful ambiance. The northern side of the beach is less frequently traveled, so head that way for some undisturbed shell-hunting. Similar to Anna Maria Island, Nokomis Beach is known to have shark teeth turn up alongside the shells. - Venice Beach
"Shark Tooth Capital of the World" may be a quirky title, but Venice Beach wears it proudly. Each year, the community around Venice homes for sale holds a Shark Tooth Festival with food, live music, and kids' activities. In fact, the whole coastal area sits atop a layer of fossils that extends 18 to 35 feet deep. Rent or buy a "Venice snow shovel," which is a screened basket attached to a handle that allows you to more easily search for the shark teeth.
