Nature Preserves Sarasota

Sarasota and the surrounding areas are known for their natural beauty. Not only is this region home to many lush trees and plants. It's also home to plenty of unique birds. Herons, egrets, and other waterbirds are popular along the coast. In wooded areas, you may also see osprey, wood storks, and spoonbills. Whether you're an experienced birder or brand new to the idea, here are some top spots our real estate agents recommend for bird watching.

  • Bayonne: 8050 Springfield Dr., Sarasota, FL 34231
Bayonne is an 11.2-acre preserve acquired by Sarasota in 2002. There is a trail that leads around the perimeter of the preserve. It's hard-packed, which makes for easy walking, and there is a bench partway if you need to take a break. Dogs are not permitted at Bayonne.

There are plenty of egrets at Bayonne, and visitors occasionally spot bald eagles. In the spring, you can sometimes see raptors nesting in the dense vegetation.

  • Pinecraft Park: 1420 Gilbert Ave., Sarasota, FL 34239
    Pinecraft Park
is a quiet park located on the banks of Phillippi Creek. There is plenty of shade, which invites lots of small birds to the area. Some of the trails leading through the park are paved, and others are unpaved. There's also a kayak launch, so you could go for a paddle and watch birds from the water.

Pinecraft Park is a great place to go birding if you have kids. There's a playground they can play on, along with restrooms, a picnic area, and volleyball courts.

  • Lemon Bay Park: 570 Bay Park Rd., Englewood, FL 34223
If you're looking at Englewood homes for sale, stop by Lemon Bay Park for some birdwatching afterward. There are always plenty of swifts, warblers, and vireos in this park. Visitors sometimes see red-shouldered hawks, too.

Lemon Bay Park is dog-friendly, although dogs must be leashed. There is an environmental center where you can learn more about the region's wildlife, a picnic area, and shelters. Lemon Bay Park also offers great fishing and has a boat launch.

  • Red Bug Slough Preserve: 5200 Beneva Rd., Sarasota, FL 34231
    Red Bug Slough Preserve
is a favorite in the Sarasota area. Visitors routinely see brown pelicans, osprey, and blue herons at this preserve. The trails are unpaved but well-marked, and the pier is a great place to enjoy some time on the water.

Red Bug Slough Preserve has a playground, restrooms, and a picnic area. The park is undergoing some improvements in the summer of 2023 and will soon be better than ever. Dogs are allowed if on a leash.

  • Rothenbach Park: 8650 Bee Ridge Rd., Sarasota, FL 34241
    Rothenbach Park
is a great place to get some exercise while birdwatching. They have a variety of outdoor fitness equipment that you can use. Blackbirds and bluejays are commonly spotted here, as are crows and mockingbirds. If you walk down by the water, you should see plenty of herons and pelicans.

Rothenbach Park does not allow dogs or other pets. Bikes are allowed on the trails, which are nicely paved. The park does have shelters, restrooms, a picnic area, and a playground for guests to use.

  • Robinson Preserve - 1704 99th St NW, Bradenton, FL 34209
Head over to Manatee County and experience some of the best birdwatching at Robinson Preserve. There's a lot to do at this spacious preserve to get in touch with nature. Besides birdwatching, consider paddleboarding or kayaking while you are there.

There are few places better for birdwatching than Sarasota. The climate and waterfront location make the region appealing to many different species. If you're thinking of moving to the area soon, contact us. We'll help you find the best Sarasota homes for sale and Bradenton homes for sale.
