Sarasota Florida's Cultural Coast

Sarasota Mansions, Museums & More

Sarasota is about so much more than beautiful beaches and fantastic shopping and dining, although we can't brag enough about those attributes. Our city is a mosaic of cultural events and attractions that are begging to be explored. Known as the "Cultural Coast" of Florida, the Sarasota area adds an unheralded depth of sophistication and education with its various performing arts venues, museums and more. If you are drawn to the area and are thinking of purchasing one of several Sarasota homes for sale, be sure to spend some time acquainting yourself with our city's cultural flair.

John Ringling's Mansion

It would be difficult to find a more fascinating and breathtaking display of art and architecture than the collection at John Ringling's Mansion. One of the founders of the world-famous Ringling Bros Circus, John Ringling, and his wife had the Venetian Gothic style home built after his travels through Europe. Particularly enthralled by Venice, the Ringlings brought back not only art but inspiration for what would be their winter home and eventually a tribute to both their lifestyle and their circus legacy. The mansion, officially called Ca' d'Zan, is a whopping 36,000 square feet and houses several permanent art collections and special exhibitions. Visitors can also enjoy performances at the mansion's theater, a museum dedicated to the circus and family oriented events. The home and gardens are an attraction in themselves, showcasing the grandeur of Venetian style.

Museums

Aside from John Ringling's Mansion, you'll find several other museums in Sarasota that are definitely worth a visit. Just as its name implies, the Marietta Museum of Art and Whimsy puts the spotlight on the fun and whimsical with bright and inspiring pieces of art. The Sarasota Classic Car Museum is a must-see for lovers of vintage automobiles, and Crowley Museum and Nature Center is a great family attraction that nature enthusiasts and pioneering spirits will love. With a great collection of contemporary art on display, Art Center Sarasota focuses on showcasing area artists and educating the public through workshops and special events.

Performing Arts

If you love live music, Sarasota Orchestra won't disappoint. From their Masterworks and Pops series to special events that include the annual Sarasota Music Festival, the orchestra presents a variety of entertainment throughout the year. If you prefer live theater, Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe performs Broadway hits and much more in a display of fun and musical excitement. You'll also find a fantastic variety of music, comedy, dance and theatrical performances at Sarasota's Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall.

Botanical Gardens

Art extends to the great outdoors in Sarasota and its beautiful botanical displays. Visit the tranquil grounds of Marie Shelby Botanical Gardens where you can peacefully stroll through the grounds and marvel at over 20,000 plants carefully tended and arranged for our enjoyment. Sarasota Garden Club is open to the public and is home to thirteen individual gardens that you can leisurely explore.

Sarasota is an all around great place to live, and with so much to discover on the Cultural Coast, we think you'll be delighted time and again.
